Discovery of an exoplanet, composed primarily of water

Artist's view of the exoplanet-GJ 436b.
It appears red because it reflects the red light from its star

Astronomers have discovered a small planet the size of Neptune around GJ 436, a red dwarf located 30 light-years from Earth since 2004 and assumed to house a small planet 22 times the mass of Earth orbiting 4 million kilometres from its star. The planet was detected at the precise moment when it passed between its star and Earth, she was named GJ 436b. According to Michaƫl Gillon, a researcher from Liege to lead the team responsible for this discovery, 'this represents an important step on the road leading to the detection and characterization of planets similar to Earth. 'This is all the more extraordinary that the Observatoire de St-Luc is mainly dedicated to popularizing and tourism', said Brice-Olivier Demory, a researcher at the Geneva Observatory and a member of the Scientific Committee on OFXB.

A planet that does not resemble anything known
The extent of this transit can calculate the diameter of the planet which is 50000 km, or about 4 times that of Earth. This measure can determine that the planet is composed mainly of water. If the world was composed of hydrogen and helium, like Jupiter and Saturn would be bigger, and if it was composed of rock and iron like Earth, Mars or Venus, it would be smaller. This planet of water can either be surrounded by a layer of gas consisting of hydrogen and helium, like Neptune and Uranus, or be covered with water up to the outside, like most of the satellites of Jupiter. The proximity between the planet and its star and the greenhouse effect likely than suffer the planet can estimate the temperature on the surface thereof to over 300 degrees centigrade. If its atmosphere contains lots of water is in the form of steam. In the interior, the water must be in a solid state exotic that does not exist on Earth, but physicists have reproduced in a laboratory. According to Frederic Pont, a researcher at the Geneva Observatory, 'water has in fact several strong statements, in addition to the classic ice which we are familiar. A very high pressure, it turns first to liquid and then solid denser than water and ice, the same way as carbon in the form of graphite turns into diamond under pressure. Physicists call these forms of solid water 'Ice VII' and 'Ice X'. If our oceans were much deeper, these exotic forms of ice formed on their merits. In the world of GJ 436, this curious' ice 'is becoming a very high temperature. At the center of the planet is likely to be a rocky heart of a size comparable to the Earth.

An important consequence
Bringing this world ice hot an important consequence. It shows for the first time that planets similar to Neptune exist at distances close to their star. This helps to imagine that many small masses of planets detected around other stars are also composed of water. Some of them have perhaps an atmosphere with temperatures lower imagine that the presence of liquid water and therefore an immense ocean surface. These planets are known as' ocean planets'. 'The Corot satellite, which has just started its mission will have the ability to detect planets of similar size to the one we have just measure around the star GJ 436, and even smaller. The program Corot which astronomers from the Universities of Liege and Geneva are participating, will continue beyond this discovery and large-scale study and exploration of the planets oceans and rocky planets like the Earth. " said Didier Queloz, a researcher at the Geneva Observatory and co-discoverer with Michel Mayor of the first extrasolar planet in 1995.
